Nowadays,“melancholy depression”is disproportionately well─known in the society, as if it were the only type of depressive disorder;however, the following two points have actually been identified. First, depression is a very complex and diverse disorder. Second, the bipolarization of depression(mild/chronic)is observed in the world trend. If depression is complex and diverse, cognitive behavioral therapy for depression also needs to be diverse accordingly, as Aaron T. Beck, the father of“cognitive therapy for depression”has acknowledged it. Criticism and discussion for methodology of Beck’s congnitive therapy contributed to further development of cognitive behavioral therapy. In the current trend, two approaches of cognitive behavioral therapy can be suggested:(1)an approach to specifically establish pathological model of chronic depression, and to combine it with an intervention by psychiatrist/psychologist as a packaged program,(2)an approach to customize psychiatrist’s/psychologist’s intervention based on the assessment of each individual case. For the future, it is suggested that more variety of approaches of cognitive behavioral therapies should be applied in order to cope with the diverse types of depression, and that interdisciplinary studies on depressive disorder should be assimilated in cognitive behavioral therapy for depression.
